Between collecting antiques, inking and printing on her offbeat letterpress, growing vegetables and listening to Grandmother playing the piano, art aficionado and architect Elena found time to create the Treehouse at Casa Barthel. Inside the sunny space, you’ll find a queen-sized canopy bed, a wood burner, a small-but-mighty kitchen, and a smattering of well-picked artwork. An oversized rain shower and separate WC are hidden away behind the bedroom.
The moody but witty chalkboard walls and the warmest of welcomes from the familigia Barthel are made even better by being in the wine-rich location with knockout views over Florence, just minutes away. Climb down from your brilliantly curated loft to explore the boundless grounds of the old stone villa: find a tennis court, small swimming pool, and dining porch with a wood-fired oven.
The cafes and boutiques of Florence have you covered for quality cappuccino and vintage frippery so sip, shop, and hop from famed gallery to famed gallery. On cooler days, ask the honey and herbal tea-selling monks to give you a colorful tour of the Certosa including a peep inside one of their homes.
